Duodenal atresia with apple-peel jujenoilial deformity: Case report and review of the literature

Duodenal atresia (DA) with small bowel atresia is an extremely rare condition. The widely accepted theory beyond DA development differs from that for small bowel atresia. We report here a case of a baby having both conditions. 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Duodenal atresia is believed to occur due to failure of recanalization, whereas jejunal atresia is due to an intrauterine vascular accident [1e4]. The presence of both conditions could be a pure coincidence or due to a common pathology that would make the old theory seem rather questionable. We report here a rare case of a preterm babywith DA and an apple-peel configuration of the rest of the small intestine. To our knowledge, this is the fifth such case reported in the English literature [5e8].
